Comprehensive Guide to Medium and Low Voltage Cable Terminations

Cable terminations are among the most sensitive components in low and medium voltage electrical distribution networks. Their function is not limited to connecting the cable to a panel or transformer; it includes reconstructing the cable's electrical insulation in a way that prevents electrical discharge (Corona Discharge) and evenly distributes voltage stress at the connection point.

Choosing the appropriate termination depends on several complex factors, most importantly: the voltage level (Low, Medium, or High Voltage), cable type (copper or aluminum core), inner insulation type (XLPE or PVC), and whether the installation is indoors or outdoors.

The stripping and installation process must be carried out by specialized and certified technicians, using precise cable stripping tools to avoid damaging the inner insulation. Additionally, the application of heat shrink or cold shrink tubes must follow manufacturer instructions meticulously to ensure a tight seal against moisture and dust.

Improper installation of cable terminations is the leading cause of earth faults and electrical arcing in transformer rooms and distribution panels, leading to continuous outages and severe fires. Choosing high-quality materials and installing them professionally is your guarantee for safe operation.
